Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, a thriving metro area of New York State. Roslyn’s history shows the community being named after the Roslin Castle in Scotland and was called Hempstead Harbor, changing its name in 1844. Roslyn Heights is in the eastern part of the Town of North Hempstead at exit 37 on the Long Island Expressway, Interstate 495.
As part of the Great Roslyn area, Roslyn Heights leans to Democratic supports having helped to elect Barack Obama. There are seven addition areas that make up the Great Roslyn area are East Hills, Flower Hill, Greenvale, Roslyn Estates, Roslyn Harbor, Roslyn Heights, Searingtown.
Attractions
The area is filled with history dedicated to historic districts with homes built during the 19th century. Commercial and institutional properties have become part of the historical district for their architecture. One of those noted addresses is the Rescue Hook & Ladder Company No 1 Firehouse listed on the National Register of Historical places.
Cedarmere Clayton Estate was part of the Cullen Bryant estate, located on the west side of Bryant Avenue overlooking Hempstead Harbor. He was born in Massachusetts and spent the majority of his adult life as a New Yorker. Besides his writing involvements he was a major contributor to the ideas, which today is Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Roslyn Grist Mill was built by John Robeson during the mid-18th century selling to Jeremiah Williams and a third owner, Hendrick Onderdonk and visited by George Washington. The mill changed ownership two more times before it was converted into a tea house and museum from 1916 -1975. The last and final owner is currently Nassau County Parks department. Its Dutch colonial frame added value to the National Register of Historic place since 1986.
